South Wales GOC

You’ve tried the scene:

now try the scenery!

Lush green valleys, crystal clear lakes, glorious coastline, magnificent hills with fantastic views – you’ve seen the usual tourist board blurb, and it’s all true! Wales is a truly beautiful country, and yet many of us don’t actually get to experience what is right on our doorstep. Perhaps the idea of a walk in the country sounds tempting, but the practicalities of plotting a route and finding those elusive footpaths seems daunting; or perhaps you just feel exhausted after the usual grind of a hard week at work. Give it a try, though - an exhilarating walk in gorgeous surroundings is a wonderful way of recharging your batteries, and keeping fit – and an awful lot cheaper than gym membership!

The South Wales Gay Outdoor Club (GOC) is part of the the national Gay Outdoor Club, an organisation for lesbians and gay men established in 1974, and which has well over a thousand members. The Gay Outdoor Club is divided into local groups, and any GOC member can come along on any of the walks organised by any of the GOC groups – not just the South Wales ones. GOC activities include not only walking, but other outdoor activities such as canoeing and cycling, although the majority of our events are walks. Many South Wales GOC members are also involved in the South Wales Gay Badminton group too (for details, e-mail Cecil at cp68@btinternet.com).

Our walks vary from easy five-mile strolls to strenuous hill walks – check with the walk co-ordinator to see whether a walk is the one for you. Numbers on walks varies between ten to as many as 40. The age range also varies but is mostly between 30-50, though we’re very keen to attract more women, and a wider age range. Do bring stout shoes or boots (not daps) and rainproof clothing. Some walks have pub stops where food is available, but many do not - so please bring a packed lunch where specified in the programme.

You’re welcome to come along on any of our walks without joining to see if this is the right group for you. If it is, then joining GOC will give you access to all the walks everywhere in the UK, a monthly magazine with all the walks sent to your address and the opportunity to go to the annual GOC gathering.
